1. Where does the run start?
The Wednesday Run LEAVES at 6.30pm PROMPT from Cutters
Wharf/Belfast Boat Club car park every week. (Google
Maps).
2. Who organises the run?
The run is organised by the
Up
and Runners Running Club and organised through the
Up and Running forum. The ethos of the Up & Runners Club is
to encourage people to run. We want to see new people joining in
and getting the same enjoyment from running in company with
like-minded individuals. Check out our "Beginners Information" page for advice on how to start running,
this contains a small training plan, which we recommend you
complete before running with us.
3. Who is welcome?
Everyone is welcome, you do not have to be a member of Up and
Runners to join in. Runners of all abilities are encouraged and welcome to
join us. We would ask any newcomers to either contact
us at
info@upandrunners.com, or check the
Wednesday thread on the forum to arrange running with us.
The Wednesday thread is pretty long, please go to the last page
to see the more recent posts.
In the interests of safety we require at least 2 club members to
be present at the Wednesday run to welcome any newcomers to the
group. Newcomers are required to fill in a short questionnaire
(see Q9).
4. Are there any changing facilities?
Unfortunately not. Please turn up ready to run.
5. How many people will there be?
There are usually between 10 and
20 people on any given night. The
Wednesday thread contains a list of everyone who will be
running.
6. What distance/speed do you run?
Distance and pace vary across the group with some groups covering 3
miles at 10/11-minute mile pace or others up to 14 miles at
7-minute mile pace. Most people run 3, 5 or 7 miles.
In the summer we usually run along the towpath and regroup at
set points where you will have the option to turn back. In the
winter we generally run a loop round the Embankment, again
regrouping at certain points.
7. Do you ever do more specific training sessions (e.g.
intervals, hills)?
On certain weeks, specific training sessions will be run
alongside the regular Wednesday run. Details will also be posted
on the
Wednesday thread on the U&R forum. A regular session will
always be run in addition to these sessions.
8. Will I be too slow/get left behind?
Runners of all abilities are encouraged and welcome to join us.
In the
interests of safety, one club member will be assigned to run
with the slowest group of runners. Please do not worry that you
will be slowing someone else down. Any Club members, who are
interested in pairing up with new runners, please arrive at
Cutters by 6.20pm.
9. I’ve never run with you before, what do I
need to do?
1. Please post on the
Wednesday thread of the U&R forum (you will need to
register, see Q11), or email us in advance at
info@upandrunners.com.
Please DO NOT just turn up.
2. First time runners are required to fill in a short
questionnaire to give us an indication of your ability. This
form is available
HERE, please print it out and bring it with you on Wednesday
night or email it to
info@upandrunners.com.
3. If you are turning up for the first time please arrive by
6.20pm to allow us to allocate you to a suitable group.
4. Please DO NOT go back to your car without telling someone.
10. How do I sign up?
To allow us to organise Wednesday sessions, it is important that
EVERYONE adds his or her name to the list on the
Wednesday thread on the forum. If you are a first timer,
please give us an indication of the distance and speed you would
like to run. You can add your name to the list by copying and
pasting the old list into the reply box and adding your name to
the bottom. The list usually starts on Monday or Tuesday of each
week.
Please note: we do not check other online forums. If you want to
run on a Wednesday, please use the Up and Running forum.
11. I'm having trouble registering for the forum?
There is a thread on the forum dealing with this,
click here. If you still cannot register, please feel free
to email us at
info@upandrunners.com.
12. When you arrive:
a. Turning up the first time is the hardest part, give yourself
a pat on the back.
b. Find the person in charge, and introduce yourself!
i. Hand in your
form
ii. Confirm what sort of distance you usually run and in what
sort of time
iii. Do you have any injuries or health issues we need to know
about

details of regrouping points and looping back
d. Run at your own pace
e. Do not worry about keeping up with the group, there will be
someone there to make sure everyone stays together
f. Please tell someone if you are struggling
g. Please DO NOT leave without telling anyone (unless you're
back at the car park obviously!)
h. Enjoy!
